The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Robert H. Armstrong (MCSN: 0-6814), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Artillery Liaison Officer attached to the THIRD Marine Division during the Battle of Piva Forks, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 24 November 1943. Although continually subjected to fire from enemy outposts, Major Armstrong made a thorough reconnaissance of a strongly fortified hostile position, determining troop dispositions and the location of emplacements. Forced by the surrounding jungle growth to establish an artillery forward observation post in an unsheltered area, he gallantly held his position under violent enemy opposition, registering the fire of seven batteries and directing an intense barrage which destroyed the Japanese installations. Major Armstrong’s daring courage and heroic devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
