The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William J. Anthony (MCSN: 357189), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Tank Driver serving with the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, 29 December 1943. Forced to relinquish his post when seriously wounded in the hand by hostile mortar fire, Private First Class Anthony steadfastly refused to be evacuated and, skillfully manning the bow machine gun, enabled his tank to operate effectively during the ensuing action. Private First Class Anthony’s great personal bravery, indomitable fighting spirit and unrelenting devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were an inspiration to his comrades and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
