The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Stuart E. Andrews (MCSN: 0-16360), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines (Reinforced), FIFTH Amphibious Corps, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Parry Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, 22 February 1944. When his platoon suffered heavy casualties under the enemy’s terrific machine gun and mortar fire during the initial landing, Second Lieutenant Andrews, although operating within hand grenade range of a large concentration of Japanese troops, immediately reorganized and led the remnants of his platoon in a sustained assault to destroy beach defenses, penetrating inland and protecting the flank of the Landing Team. With his group in serious difficulty in a later action, he made his way through raking machine gun and mortar fire to the Landing Team Command Post to report the situation and obtain reinforcements with which to continue the attack and, by his own personal courage and skillful employment of troops, broke up an enemy counterattack, thereby contributing to the sustained advance of our forces and to the complete annihilation of Japanese forces on the Island. His professional skill, inspiring leadership and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
