The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Peter N. Andrews (MCSN: 375429), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 2 July 1944. Although wounded while moving his machine gun squad into position, Private First Class Andrews steadfastly remained with his men and delivered an intense stream of fire against hostile gun emplacements then, skillfully covering his company’s movements, assisted materially in preventing further casualties. Courageously exposing himself to withering enemy fire in order to direct his squad more effectively throughout the violent action, he fought his weapon with determined aggressiveness until he was mortally wounded. Private First Class Andrews’ daring initiative and great personal valor in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
