The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert L. Anderson (MCSN: 523739), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 25 September 1944. Completely disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Anderson remained continually on the front lines, encouraging his men and leading his fire team forward. Refusing to be evacuated when wounded in the head by shell fragments as his fire team attempted to close a gap between two platoons, he remained with his company until two hand grenades landed in his trench later that night and inflicted additional wounds. By his fortitude, leadership and devotion to duty, Private First Class Anderson upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
