The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George E. Anderson (MCSN: 975497), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Litter Bearer of the Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 26 February 1945. When a Marine was seriously wounded by mortar fire twenty yards ahead of the lines, Private Anderson unhesitatingly crawled through enemy machine gun cross-fire to the shellhole where the wounded man was lying. Extricating him from the shellhole, he carried him to safety, thereby contributing directly to saving the man’s life. On numerous other occasions, he braved hostile fire to carry out his hazardous duties. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
