The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Eugene P. Amurri (MCSN: 398389), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Headquarters & Service Battery, Ninth Defense Battalion, at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 27 July 1943. In his seventh sortie as a tank driver against strongly entrenched enemy positions, Private First Class Amurri was seriously wounded in his left knee. Despite this, and with the use of only one foot, he courageously drove his tank safely to the rear and by this action saved the lives of his commanding officer and two fellow tank men.
