The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Thurel R. Amason (MCSN: 399098), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 1 July 1944. When the advance of his company was halted by intense hostile machine gun and mortar fire in an attack on a high ridge and many casualties were inflicted on the group, Corporal Amason bravely worked his way to the aid of the wounded and, although subjected to the heavy fire, successfully carried two of his comrades to safe positions where they could be attended. Returning again through the exposed area under continuous shellfire to rescue a third man, he, himself, received a serious wound. His courage, devotion to duty and grave concern for the welfare of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
