The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James S. Allshouse (MCSN: 952106), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Gunner of Company C, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 12 March 1945. Unable to bring effective fire on a hostile pillbox and many enemy soldiers which he had located in trenches, Private First Class Allshouse loaded himself with white phosphorus grenades and hand grenades and proceeded under intense small arms fire to the assault platoons where he persuaded three men to continue forward with him. Met by a heavy volume of hostile fire when he reached hand grenade range of the enemy, he threw his grenades despite the danger until he had either killed or put to flight all Japanese soldiers in the position. Immediately returning to his gun position, he resumed fire on other enemy targets and, by his actions, contributed materially to the capturing of the company objective. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
