The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Walter W. Alleman (MCSN: 838610), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 4 May 1945. Subjected to heavy grenade, rifle and machine gun fire, Private First Class Alleman led his men with coolness and courage in valiant defense of his company’s position against a strong enemy counter-landing. When the attacking forces approached his position, he boldly engaged the enemy and, killing ten of them, disrupted their attack and thereby enabled his unit to hold the commanding ground above the beach. His personal courage, daring initiative and aggressive devotion to duty were strong factors in repulsing the enemy counterattack and reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Alleman and the United States Naval Service.
