The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Calvin P. Albright (MCSN: 509600), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Second in Command of an Assault Team of Headquarters Company, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on enemy-held Peleliu, Palau Islands, 14 September 1944. Receiving a call from the front line for flame throwers, Private First Class Albright voluntarily led his squad in an assault on a heavy enemy fortification from which machine guns were inflicting severe casualties. Although half of his squad became casualties from the deadly fire, he skillfully placed the remaining men to deliver frontal fire in the mouth of the cave while he daringly assaulted the flank with a flame thrower. Determined to force the hostile defenders into the open, he hurled white phosphorous grenades into the cave until the Japanese charged him, whereupon he discharged the flame thrower and annihilated thirteen of the enemy. By his courageous efforts, Private First Class Albright aided materially in restoring contact between units of the separate regiments, and his gallant conduct in the face of heavy hostile fire was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
