The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Timothy A. Kasmiskie, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Kasmiskie distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 16 August 1968, while serving as a squad leader with Company E, 2d Battalion (Air Mobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, during an enemy attack in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit’s perimeter came under an enemy mortar and ground attack, Sergeant Kasmiskie exposed himself to the murderous barrage as he rallied his men in defense of their sector of the perimeter. An estimated two companies of enemy sappers penetrated the perimeter, and Sergeant Kasmiskie personally engaged two insurgents in hand-to-hand combat, killing both and causing others to flee. When a satchel charge was thrown at his men, he picked it up and threw it back at the enemy. Although wounded, Sergeant Kasmiskie refused medical evacuation, and his courageous example inspired the other wounded members of his squad to also choose to maintain their positions. His leadership and quick actions were instrumental in routing the enemy and preventing further penetration. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
