The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Fourth Class Frederick L. Golladay, United States Army, for heroic achievement on 13 May 1970 while serving as a Squad Leader during Operation BINH TAY in the Republic of Vietnam. Set up in a defensive position on Fire Support Base Valkyrie, Specialist Fourth Class Golladay’s platoon came under mortar, heavy machine gun and intense small arms fire from a large enemy force and sustained numerous casualties. Without regard for his personal safety, he ran approximately 50 yards across an open unprotected area to a bunker where he engaged an estimated 20 to 50 North Vietnamese Army Regulars. Specialist Fourth Class Golladay then returned to his bunker, found it damaged and moved to an adjacent bunker where he and others continued to engage the enemy, some at close quarters. His actions were instrumental in gaining fire superiority, preventing the base from being overrun by the advancing enemy and eventually routing them. Specialist Fourth Class Golladay’s personal heroism, professional competence and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
