The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Walter H. Spencer (ASN: 11045828), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism on 20 March 1945 while serving with the 831st Bombardment Squadron, 485th Bombardment Group. Sergeant Spencer, together with another man arrived at the service squadron’s refueling pump with their own gasoline trailer when they saw another squadron’s trailer, which had just been filled with 100 octane gasoline, burst into flames. Discovering that the tractor, which was connected with the burning trailer, could not be started, in heroic disregard for their own safety, Sergeant Spencer and the other man disconnected the coupling between the tractor and trailer and towed the flaming trailer from under the refueling point to a place in the area where there was least danger to nearby aircraft and other property. As soon as the coupling was disconnected, Sergeant Spender drove his own tractor to safety. By his splendid actions in the face of grave danger, his unhesitating risk of his life and the magnificent example of devotion to duty he demonstrate, Sergeant Spencer has reflected the greatest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
