The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunnery Sergeant Jack C. Adcock (MCSN: 348225), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while acting as Platoon Leader serving with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces o the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, on 16 June 1944. With his platoon pinned down under a concentrated Japanese artillery barrage which inflicted heavy casualties, Gunnery Sergeant Adcock refused the comparative safety of a dugout and, shouting encouragement to his men in the absence of corpsmen, fearlessly proceeded from foxhole to foxhole, resolutely aiding and evacuating the wounded despite the continuous pounding of powerful enemy guns until he fell, fatally struck down by a bursting Japanese artillery shell. By his aggressive leadership, determined initiative and undaunted courage in the face of overwhelming opposition, Gunnery Sergeant Adcock contributed materially to the success of our operations against this vital Japanese stronghold, and his decisive conduct throughout a period of fierce hostilities upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
