The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Trevor D. Brewer, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Frankfurt International Airport, Federal Republic of Germany, on 2 March 2011. On that date, while in transit to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, Sergeant Brewer demonstrated unparalleled bravery without regard for personal safety when a terrorist, armed with a semi-automatic pistol, attacked 16 unarmed Airmen at extremely close quarters. The ambush began when the enemy gunman shot and killed the last Airman attempting to board a bus departing the airport. After his first kill, the shooter boarded the bus, killed the driver and turned on the remainder of the unarmed Security Forces team firing numerous rounds into the heads and bodies of two airmen critically wounding both. As the terrorist took aim at another Airman, Sergeant Brewer, with total disregard for his own safety, exposed his head to the terrorist drawing the attacker’s attention as well as the barrel of his weapon. The shooter pulled the trigger, yet the weapon malfunctioned, inches from Sergeant Brewer’s face. Sergeant Brewer advanced, backing up the gunman who pulled the trigger a second time. The weapon failed again as Sergeant Brewer lunged at the shooter in an attempt to grab his weapon and subdue him. Displaying uncommon heroism, Sergeant Brewer continued to take the offensive by charging the gunman, chasing him off the bus, and pursuing him for 300 meters, outside the airport terminal and into the crowded terminal and up an escalator. When Sergeant Brewer reached the terminal’s second level, the German police had apprehended the gunman. With the terrorist captured, Sergeant Brewer immediately returned to the bus, assisted triage of the wounded and took action to preserve the crime scene. Sergeant Brewer’s quick and decisive action prevented the gunman from clearing the jammed casing in his weapon, killing the remaining 12 Airmen on the bus, and escaping unnoticed into the crowded airport. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Brewer reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
