The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Rex G. Adams (MCSN: 857238), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Automatic Rifleman of Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 22 to 28 June 1944. When hostile riflemen in a cave and in positions along a hill killed two men in his group, Private First Class Adams single-handedly attacked and annihilated at least five of the enemy. Wounded during an attack on a strongly-held position while protecting a squad of injured machine gunners on 26 June, he remained steadfast at his position and continued to direct accurate fire against the Japanese. By his bravery, initiative and devotion to duty throughout, Private First Class Adams upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
