The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Allen G. Adams (MCSN: 344010), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Third Engineer Battalion, Nineteenth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 17 March 1945. Volunteering to construct an approach to a hostile pocket of resistance in order that a tank company might destroy this strong point, Sergeant Adams maneuvered his lightly-armored and unarmed bulldozer deep into enemy-held territory and succeeded in building an approach which was about four hundred yards in length, constantly leading the tanks and infantry. Suddenly faced with heavy enemy resistance and enemy fire which wounded him, he coolly backed the tractor out of the area and off the trail, thereby enabling the following tank to move into firing position from which it destroyed the hostile resistance. By his initiative, calm determination and devotion to duty, Sergeant Adams upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
