The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. Adamietz (MCSN: 394414), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during an attack by Japanese aircraft on the bivouac area of the Third Signal Company, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville Island, Solomon Islands, on the night of 7 November 1943. Hearing the desperate cries of a comrade after he himself had been blown twelve feet by an exploding enemy bomb, Private First Class Adamietz courageously left his foxhole and rushed to the assistance of the wounded Marine despite the danger from high explosives and bomb fragments. Working in total darkness he skillfully applied tourniquets and held them in place, remaining with the severely injured man during continued bombing until medical aid arrived. Private First Class Adamietz’s daring initiative and great personal valor in voluntarily risking his life for a comrade were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
