The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Alfred J. Abbott (MCSN: 648225), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader in Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 21 September 1950. Repeatedly exposing himself to heavy enemy small arms and machine gun fire from a hostile position estimated to be a reinforced platoon, Corporal Abbott daringly led his fire team into the assault position and opened the attack by personally destroying an enemy machine gun nest and its protective riflemen by means of hand grenades and his effective direct fire. Seriously wounded during this action, Corporal Abbott, by his courageous initiative, leadership and devotion to duty, aided his unit materially in successfully completing its assigned mission, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
