The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Daniel Todd Sampsel, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. Specialist Fourth Class Sampsel risked his own life in an attempt to save a fellow soldier from a burning tank which was fully uploaded on 21 July 1978. While performing duties as a Medic on Range 42 at Greafenwohr, Federal Republic of Germany, a tank downloading ammunition had a main gun round explode in the turret resulting in a fire and fatally injuring a crewman. Specialist Sampsel leaped aboard the burning tank, assisted in extinguishing the fire with complete disregard for his own life, and aided in the evacuation of the injured. He directed the first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to revive the man and called the MEDEVAC. Specialist Sampsel’s conspicuous bravery reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
