The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Robert I. Cooley (ASN: 7030369), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 24 March 1945 while serving with the 2d Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, in action near Trebur, Germany. When his platoon leader was mortally wounded, Sergeant Cooley, a Platoon Sergeant, without thought of personal safety and oblivious to the intense enemy fire, went to the side of the platoon leader and removed valuable maps from his body. Efficiently assuming command and reorganizing the platoon, Sergeant Cooley, spurring the men forward over the exposed terrain, succeeded in attaining the platoon’s objective and inflicting severe casualties on the enemy. His heroic and courageous leadership, calmness under fire and zealous devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces.
