The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman Christopher A. Rushton, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life in the East China Sea near Ie Shima Island on 20 July 1981. On that date, Airman Rushton observed a woman struggling in the water who had apparently fallen from the Ie Shima Ferry. With complete disregard for his own safety he entered the water and persevered in his humanitarian efforts until he succeeded in bringing the woman to the platform of the ship. By his courageous and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Airman Rushton has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
