The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Boiler Technician First Class Terrel E. Doyals, United States Navy, for heroism on 19 October 1971 while serving in U.S.S. CLAUDE V. Ricketts (DDG-5). During the ship’s transit to the Bermuda Islands, Petty Officer Petty Officer Doyals observed a shipmate who had been washed overboard and was experiencing extreme difficulties due to the heavy seas and high winds. Petty Officer Doyals, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly plunged into the turbulent waters in an attempt to rescue the victim. Despite the fact that the rescue was unsuccessful, Petty Officer Doyals courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
