The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Engineman First Class Joseph Alan Durr, United States Navy, for heroism while attached to U.S.S. BAINBRIDGE (CGN-25) on 25 January 1982. Upon seeing his shipmate collapse, Petty Officer Durr descended an unventilated trunk of the ship to assist him. Realizing something was wrong with the atmosphere, Petty Officer Durr returned to the main deck where he called for assistance. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the danger involved, he then reentered the trunk to assist his shipmate despite being overcome by deadly freon gas. When additional assistance arrived, Petty Officer Durr exited the space and collapsed in convulsions. By his spontaneous and selfless actions in an effort to render assistance to his shipmate which resulted in the loss of his own life, Petty Officer Durr reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
