The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Private First Class Jimmie J. Duke, Jr., United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as a Recruiter Assistant with Recruiting Station Macon, Georgia on 2 September 1983. Upon being flagged down by a construction worker, Private First Class Duke unhesitatingly plunged into a pool of turbulent water with complete disregard for his own safety to assist two trapped men underwater. Despite the suction of the water and the great risk to himself, Private First Class Duke performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation underwater to one of the unconscious victims and continued CPR once the victim was freed. By his prompt, courageous, and selfless actions in the face of great personal risk, Private First Class Duke undoubtedly saved the man from drowning; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
