The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Yeoman Second Class Oliver Lee Duck, United States Navy, for heroism while serving with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron ONE, Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland on 27 October 1978. On liberty at 334 Town Creek Drive in Lexington Park, Maryland, during the late evening hours, Petty Officer Duck witnessed an automobile moving at a high rate of speed depart the highway, collide with a tree, and burst into flames. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, Petty Officer Duck unhesitatingly raced to the burning vehicle and with great effort extracted the unconscious driver. After carrying the driver a safe distance away from eminent explosion and putting out the flames on his clothing, Petty Officer Duck raced back to the burning vehicle in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the other trapped passenger. Petty Officer Duck’s courageous and prompt action in the face of great personal risk undoubtedly saved the driver from certain death; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
