The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Warrant Officer Two Richard Fred Doolittle (NSN: 5837588), United States Navy, for heroism on 10 August 1977 while serving as Flight Deck Boatswain on board U.S.S. SARATOGA (CV-60). Upon sighting the Hook Runner in the direct path of a moving aircraft and realizing that the man was not aware of the aircraft movement, Chief Warrant Officer Doolittle, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly ran to the Hook Runner’s aid. Placing himself in the path of the aircraft main mount, Chief Warrant Officer Doolittle then proceeded to pull the man to safety, thus averting a fatal injury. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risks, Chief Warrant Officer Doolittle reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
