The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal Gus Anthony Diprizio, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving at Marine Air Control Squadron FIVE, Second Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, South Carolina on 6 March 1981. After hearing an explosion, Corporal Diprizio rushed from his house to find an adjacent house ablaze. Upon arrival, he was informed that there were children inside. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, Corporal Diprizio unhesitatingly entered the burning house, effecting the rescue of one of the children. Re-entering the house in an attempt to find the second child, he was driven out by the intense heat and smoke. He assisted in locating and rescuing the second child from the blaze. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Corporal Diprizio undoubtedly saved the children from certain death; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
