The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Commander Ronald E. Dimambro, United States Navy, for heroism while serving on board U.S.S. MANLEY (DD-940) on 8 April 1979. During the light-off of 1A boiler, a sudden oil leak occurred which engulfed the burner front aisle in flames and thick smoke. The initial flash inflicted severe burns on a fellow officer, Lieutenant Gilbert L. Johnson. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal danger involved, Lieutenant Commander Dimambro helped the injured officer from the immediate path of the flames and extinguished his burning clothing. Despite the intense flames, thick smoke, and darkness due to power outage, Lieutenant Commander Dimambro heroically led Lieutenant Johnson to safety through the suffocating and blinding smoke to the escape shuttle. By his courageous and prompt action in the face of great personal risk, Lieutenant Commander Dimambro saved his friend from certain immediate death; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
