The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Master Chief Sonar Technician John Larimer Davis, Jr. (NSN: 4805119), United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Naval Surface Force Atlantic, Readiness Support Group, Mayport, Florida, on 1 September 1978. Upon being alerted by a neighbor that a fire had trapped a sixty-one year old man in his home, Master Chief Petty Officer Davis opened the door and began a search for the victim. He located the resident just as he was overcome by smoke inhalation. Backing out of the house to recover his breath, Master Chief Petty Officer Davis, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly re-entered the burning house crawling under the searing heat and smoke to reach the burned man and dragged him to safety. Master Chief Petty Officer Davis’ courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk undoubtedly sustained the man’s life and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
