The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Hospital Corpsman Roger Leo Creighton, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Naval Security Group Activity Edzell, Scotland on 3 November 1978. Upon arriving at the scene of a serious two-car collision in Muirdrum, Scotland, Chief Petty Officer Creighton took immediate action to treat the victims according to severity of injuries. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, Chief Petty Officer Creighton performed external cardiac massage on a victim trapped inside a gasoline-drenched van which was in imminent danger of exploding. When the ambulances finally arrived, he coordinated the treatment and evacuation of the casualties. As a result of his professional assistance and strong leadership, victims on the scene remained calm and first aid which surely saved at least one life was administered to the injured. Chief Petty Officer Creighton’s prompt and courageous actions reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
