The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Sergeant Sharon Eolane Crain, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving at Detachment Company K, Marine Support Battalion, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas on 26 June 1981. While Sergeant Crain was participating in a horse-drawn wagon ride during a trail breakfast near Amarillo, Texas, the horses bolted causing the driver of the horse-drawn wagon to be thrown off. Sergeant Crain, a passenger on the wagon and with complete disregard for her own safety, crawled over the front of the carriage onto the T-Bar and retrieved the reins of the runaway team. With the assistance of the cowhands working the ranch who rode in alongside the wagon, Sergeant Crain was able to draw up the team and halt the wagon, thus preventing the wagon from overturning. By her courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Sergeant Crain undoubtedly saved the other 25 passengers from serious injury and possible death; thereby reflecting great credit upon herself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
