The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel Karl T. Feuerriegel (AFSN: 0-762299), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Operations Officer and Commander, 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron, Nha Trang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam from 29 October 1967 to 1 October 1968. In this important assignment, the professional leadership, exemplary foresight, and ceaseless efforts consistently demonstrated by Colonel Feuerriegel resulted in significant contributions to the effectiveness and success of the commitments of the United States in the Republic of Vietnam. He continually rendered outstanding support to all Tactical Air Control Parties located throughout the II Corps Tactical Zone, thereby playing an immeasurable role in the effectiveness of the close air support mission which continually frustrated the opposing forces. The superior initiative, outstanding leadership, and personal endeavor displayed by Colonel Feuerriegel reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Feuerriegel (AFSN: 0-762299), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy while serving as a Pilot of the 741st Bombardment Squadron, 455th Bombardment Group, FIFTEENTH Air Force, in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Throughout many combat missions against highly important and strategic enemy installations, Lieutenant Feuerriegel demonstrated the highest order of professional skill, heroism, leadership and devotion to duty. Despite heavy enemy opposition encountered on these long and hazardous missions, together with severe and adverse weather conditions, his outstanding leadership, personal example and tactical skill have contributed materially to the defeat of the armed forces of the enemy. His conspicuous and extraordinary achievements throughout these many missions against the enemy have been of inestimable value to the success of combat operations and have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Title 10, Section 8742, United States Code, takes pleasure in presenting the Air Force Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Karl T. Feuerriegel (AFSN: 0-762299), United States Air Force, for extraordinary heroism in military operations against an opposing armed force as a Forward Air Controller of the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron, Nha Trang Air Base, Vietnam, in action at Nha Trang, Republic of Vietnam, on 30 January 1968. On that date, in conjunction with the Tet Offensive, a large, well-equipped hostile force entered the city, intent on overrunning military installations and releasing a large contingent of hostile captives from the local prison. The hostiles’ entrenched positions prevented reinforcements from reaching the battle areas where friendly forces were in dire need of support. Lieutenant Colonel Feuerriegel, despite great personal risk from heavy automatic weapons fire, repeatedly attacked hostile positions in an O-2 aircraft armed with high explosive rockets. He systematically silenced three machine gun positions and neutralized two fortified hostile companies, thereby preventing the annihilation of beleaguered friendly units. Through his extraordinary heroism, superb airmanship, and aggressiveness, Lieutenant Colonel Feuerriegel reflected the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
