The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Walter E. Young (ASN: 6947498), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa. On the morning of ** ***** 1943, in the vicinity of *****, a group of 29 enemy aircraft attacked, by dive bombing and strafing, vehicles of his company located in a field. Although his vehicle was in the center of the area most heavily attacked, Private Young courageously and with complete disregard of his own welfare continuously fired the .50 caliber machine gun on his vehicle and shot down one enemy plane. The bravery and devotion to duty displayed by Private Young are highly commendable.
