The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John T. Appelhons (ASN: 20704885), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Armored Division in North Africa. On ** **** 1943, Sergeant Appelhons distinguished himself in action against an armed enemy at *****. He voluntarily and with complete disregard for his own welfare singly entered an olive grove surrounding the town. In doing so he came under mortar, machine gun and artillery fire. From his advanced position he passed back information of enemy installations. By his heroic action, his example of fearless leadership, he instilled courage in those around him. His actions contributed greatly to the successful advance of his unit and reflect the finest traditions of the Armed Forces.
