The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major Jermain R. Sabbatt, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life on 12 January 2010, while searching for survivors from the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Haiti. After being informed of the ongoing collapse of Hotel Montana, the lodging site for visiting members of the United States Southern Command, Major Sabbatt and a fellow United States Air Force officer immediately trudged nearly four miles to reach the building over inaccessible roads. Upon reaching the hotel, he immediately and with complete disregard for his own safety began to search the corridors until an aftershock forced the search party to evacuate the unstable structure. Despite the ongoing danger, he then continued to search the rubble until the party located an Airman who was trapped under debris. Assisted by his fellow officer and several other individuals, Major Sabbatt was eventually able to free the Airman and lead him to safety. Afterwards, he continued to help in the search for other survivors. His selflessness in the face of danger undoubtedly helped save the life of the Airman and is an example for all Soldiers to follow. Major Sabbatt’s exemplary courage and heroic actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
