The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Airman First Class David H. McGill (AFSN: AF-17362443), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Columbia, South Carolina, on 11 February 1956. On that date, when Airman McGill saw a car go out of control and plunge into Caughmans Pond he called out into the darkness and instructed the occupants to swim in his direction. When he heard cries for help and a woman’s voice stating that her baby was drowning he immediately dived into the icy water and swam to the vehicle. Without thought for his own safety and preservation, he entered the sinking car from the rear door and searched for the infant. After failing in this attempt, he decided to help the husband and wife swim to shore. As they did, the baby was found floating on the water. Releasing the adults, Airman McGill carried the baby to shore, returned to the couple and assisted them to safety. By his courage, determination and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Airman McGill reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
