The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Kay Tyler (AFSN: AF-10200058), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Bear Creek, Arkansas, on 8 May 1955. Sergeant Tyler, without thought for his own safety and preservation, swam to the rescue of four women whose boat had overturned. One of the women managed to swim ashore, leaving one clinging to the capsized craft and the other two clutching each other and vainly attempting to stay afloat. With unusual presence of mind, Sergeant Tyler pried the two panic-stricken women apart, pushed one to a floating gas can, and towed the other to the inverted skiff and placed her upon it. He then circled the partially submerged craft, offering encouragement and averting panic until another boat could arrive to take the group ashore. The exemplary courage and presence of mind displayed by Sergeant Tyler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
