The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Albert R. Smith (ASN: US-54007107), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery C, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On the evening of 14 August 1952, a truck in the Battery area caught fire and before personnel could reach it, it was engulfed in pungent flames. The intense heat, acrid smoke, and pending danger of the gasoline exploding made any attempts to extinguish the flames extremely hazardous. The men were warned to remain considerable distance from the blaze, but aware of the dangers involved and disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Smith ignored the fierce flames, leaped into the rear of the vehicle and with a pair of pliers attempted to remove a valuable radio mounted in the truck. The group of men that had congregated in the immediate area inspired by Sergeant Smith’s daring feats, quickly assisted by throwing sand and dirt upon the fire. Sergeant Smith’s conspicuous courage and intrepid actions were responsible for saving a valuable radio and the vehicle from complete destruction and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
