The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John J. Shalega (ASN: 13008889), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Hamich, Germany in November 1944. When the foe launched a fierce attack upon his platoon’s positions, Private Shalega, despite intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms barrage, courageously moved about perilous terrain and skillfully directed a successful defense of the area. Although painfully wounded, he fearlessly remained at his post until; his company’s positions were secured. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
