(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Private Artee Bracknell (ASN: 34100476), United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star (Posthumously) for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, at Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea, on 24 April 1944. Private Bracknell was leading scout for his platoon as it advanced cautiously through the jungle near Hollandia, going first and exposing himself to draw enemy fire before his comrades moved forward. On that date, he came to a narrow but swift river, crossed it, and climbed the bank on the other shore where his platoon could see him. Walking straight into a Japanese machine gun nest, he was taken under fire and confronted one Japanese soldier standing in front of the bunker and quickly killed him. He then fought it out with the enemy inside the pillbox, pouring round after round into the coconut palm log emplacement, waving his platoon to stay back out of danger, until he fell mortally wounded. He gallantly gave his life to keep his platoon from being annihilated.
