The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ronald Gerald Miranda, United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Miranda distinguished himself by intrepid actions on 28 June 1969 while serving as a radio-telephone operator with Company D, 2d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, Americal Division. On that date, a platoon from the company had left its night laager position near Landing Zone BALDY when it encountered a well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force. In the initial contact, the element sustained several casualties, and Private Miranda immediately rushed forward to aid his wounded comrades. At this time, he spotted a strategic hostile emplacement that was placing effective fire on the entire platoon. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Miranda, armed only with a pistol, assaulted the bunker. Despite receiving rifle and fragmentation wounds, he continued his attack and silenced one enemy soldier with fire from his personal weapon. Upon closing with the position, Private First Class Miranda ran out of ammunition, but threw two hand grenades into the bunker and completely neutralized the emplacement. His courageous actions enabled the casualties to be swiftly evacuated and were instrumental in the overall success of the mission. Private First Class Miranda’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
