The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Seaman Daniel L. Christen, United States Navy, for heroism while serving in Oceanographic Unit FOUR embarked in U.S.N.S.. CHAUVENET (T-AGS-29) during a regularly scheduled in-port period in Cebu City, Republic of the Philippines on 29 December 1979. Upon witnessing the self-drowning attempt of a fellow shipmate who had jumped from Pier One, adjacent o U.S.N.S. CHAUVENET in Cebu City Harbor, Seaman Christen, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, jumped into the dark, polluted and treacherous waters between the ship and the pier and under the pier to assist in the rescue of the violent and uncooperative victim. After a tremendous struggle, Seaman Christen was able to effect the rescue of his shipmate. By his courageous and concerned actions in the face of great personal risk, Seaman Christen undoubtedly saved his shipmate’s life and prevented possible serious physical injury; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
