The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Airman Brian Kelly Carrigan, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Attack Squadron THREE HUNDRED FOUR (VA-304), Naval Air Station, Alameda, California, on 31 July 1983. Upon observing an automobile leave the highway and overturn, Airman Carrigan stopped and proceeded to the site of the accident and found both occupants unconscious. Despite the immediate danger and with complete disregard for his own safety, Airman Carrigan removed the victims from their overturned vehicle just prior to it exploding and becoming engulfed in flames. He remained with the victims, rendering assistance until the California Highway Patrol arrived. Airman Carrigan’s prompt and courageous actions in the face of personal risk undoubtedly saved the occupants of the auto from serious injury or death; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
