The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Equipment Operator Constructionman Recruit Anthony Cangialosi, United States Navy, for heroism while on liberty at Great Falls Park, Potomac, Maryland, on 30 May 1981. On a canoe trip down the Potomac River with three shipmates, Constructionman Recruit Cangialosi observed a canoe occupied by two members of the party overturn and plunge over the falls at Little Falls Pumping Station. He and his partner paddled their canoe to the bank and ran around the pumping station where they observed the two canoeists floundering in swirling water. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal danger involved, Constructionman Recruit Cangialosi unhesitatingly plunged into the turbulent waters to save his endangered shipmates. Although one of the victims was pulled from the water by his companion ashore, Constructionman Recruit Cangialosi and the other victim succumbed to the treacherous currents below the dam’s spillway. By his heroic, selfless action in the face of extreme danger; Constructionman Recruit Cangialosi sacrificed his own life in an attempt to save the life of another; thereby reflecting the utmost credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
