The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Sergeant Sharron Lynn Campbell, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving at Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, on 1 June 1977. Upon seeing a small child, two years of age, fall over the embankment into the turbulent current of the Colorado River in El Centro, California, Sergeant Campbell, with complete disregard for her own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly plunged in the swiftly moving river and effected the rescue of the child. By her courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risks, Sergeant Campbell undoubtedly saved the little girl from drowning; thereby reflecting great credit upon herself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
