The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal Leo O. Bueno, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving with Ninth Engineer Support Battalion, Third Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan, on 3 March 1978. While en route to Camp Foster, Corporal Bueno observed a CH-46 helicopter crash in the sea and instructed the driver to turn off the highway and drive toward the crash site. Unhesitatingly, he exited the truck and ran several yards through brush-covered sand dunes to the beach area. With complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, Corporal Bueno entered the fuel-filled waters and made his way to the scene of the crash. With the help of two Corpsmen, he extricated three of the four crew members from the helicopter which was filled and surrounded by highly flammable jet fuel. Although all members of the crew were killed on impact, Corporal Bueno’s courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
