The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Commander [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] William N. Brook, Jr. (NSN: 0-445624), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while attached to Fighter Squadron FIFTY-TWO (VF-52), aboard the U.S.S. BOXER during combat operations against hostile North Korean and Chinese Communist Forces from 13 May 1953 to 27 July 1953. Flying more than forty strikes as a jet fighter pilot, Commander Brook consistently demonstrated outstanding qualities of superior flying skill and intrepid combat leadership. The aggressive spirit and courageous determination displayed in the accomplishment of his assigned missions inspired the confidence of the less experienced pilots and was reflected in the overall performance of the Squadron. By his sound judgment and superb weapons skill, he achieved outstanding success in scoring heavy destruction to enemy troops, installations, and logistic facilities; thereby contributing materially to the efforts of his Squadron in support of the United Nations Forces in Korea. Commander Brooks’ splendid performance, steadfast initiative, and unfailing devotion to duty reflected the highest credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
