    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain William David Sieg (AFSN: 0-78912), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an A-1E Pilot with the 1st Air Commando Squadron, Nakhon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in Southeast Asia on 7 January 1968. On that date, Captain Sieg was acting as escort for helicopters which came under intensive ground fire. Without regard for his own personal safety, Captain Sieg went to the aid of one of the damaged helicopters and destroyed several hostile automatic weapons positions. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Sieg has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
